Acupuncture is a science with a history dating back over 2000 years. It is based on the principle that there are five elements that make up the universe and therefore the human body. They are wood, fire, earth, metal and water, and they control and influence our emotions, our health, our personality and our response to any treatment.
The basic principle of acupuncture is that each individual is a mixture of these five elements and to be truly healthy, these elements must be balanced. Each of these elements is associated with different parts of the body, our organs, our senses, our emotions, our sense of taste, different colors and the weather.
The wood element is related to anger emotion and affects the gallbladder, liver, joints, muscles and eyes. Fire has joy and happiness as its emotions and affects our brain, spinal cord, heart, tongue, and digestive tract. Earth is linked to anxiety and affects our spleen, stomach, and mouth. Metal affects the lungs and skin, and water is linked to the emotion of fear that affects our kidneys, bones, and ears. Based on this knowledge, a practitioner can not only diagnose a disease, but also plan its reversal and predict with a reasonable degree of certainty a future disease.
Each of the five elements is also linked to a personality type and various ailments that affect them, although the correlation is not set in stone.
Wood personality tends to have an angry temper although they are athletic, energetic, and adventurous. They tend to develop orthopedic, joint or muscle health problems and even migraines.
People with fiery personalities are passionate, creative, and bossy – they tend to be impulsive and irritable. They can suffer from insomnia, high blood pressure, chest pain, and headaches. The earth element person is caring, generous, caring, anxious and thoughtful. They tend to have issues with their abdomen, hormonal issues, or some kind of cyst.
Metal is honest, responsible, singular, and great. They tend to suffer from digestive issues like constipation, lung problems, or skin allergies. Aquatic people are wise souls, they normally suffer from back pain, knee problems, kidney problems, urinary tract infections. Water also has an important control over the human reproductive system.
There are different branches of this science like Sujok, cosmetic (face), auricular (ear) and others. Sujok is a Korean therapy, which focuses on treating ailments by stimulating the hands (Su) and feet (Jok) with needles, seeds and semi-precious stones.
The main goal of acupuncture is to treat the cause, not just the symptom. When the elements are out of balance in a body, disease begins to develop and symptoms appear. To restore balance or vital energy, the basic principle of acupuncture, small painless needles are applied to specific points on the body. Acupuncture, using needles, aims to open the blockage or reduce excess vital energy (Qi) flowing through specific channels in the body called meridians.
Needling specific points produces six different effects in your body – these are analgesic, sedative, homeostatic, immune, psychological and motor recovery.
The analgesic effect relieves pain and helps in arthritis, lower back pain, headache, toothache and similar disorders. The sedative effect often helps you fall asleep during treatment and you wake up feeling refreshed. This has been shown to cause a decrease in delta and theta wave activity in the electroencephalogram (EEG). The sedative effect helps treat insomnia, anxiety, addictions, epilepsy, mental and behavioral disorders.
The homeostatic or regulatory effect helps to adjust the internal environment of the body to a state of normal equilibrium, which is maintained by the nervous and endocrine systems. It helps regulate breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, urinary excretion, metabolic rate, and other vital parameters.
Immune action strengthens the body’s resistance to disease and helps fight infections by increasing white blood cells, antibodies and gamma globulins. This helps reduce the use of antibiotics and its potential side effects. It has worked well in difficult post-Covid recovery cases.
The psychological effect is a calming and tranquilizing action due to an effect on the midbrain due to an increase in dopamine content after acupuncture, which affects the metabolic chemistry of the brain. This helps to treat cases of mental disorders and Parkinson’s disease caused by dopamine depletion.
The sixth effect of acupuncture accelerates motor recovery in patients who have become paralyzed and works well even in late cases of motor paralysis where other forms of therapy have not been effective.
Acupuncture has been successful in regulating and even reversing diabetes, a disease that arises from the body’s endocrine system by stimulating hormones like endorphins and regulating cortisol, thereby reducing stress. The hormonal reaction triggered by acupuncture also regulates the activity of the pancreas which produces insulin. This is supplemented by other physical corrective measures.
Women’s health has benefited greatly from acupuncture, especially in areas such as menstrual disorders, symptoms of menopause, female infertility, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovarian disease (OPC) and the management of sequelae of chemotherapy. It is increasingly used with infertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) to increase the chances of success by simulating reproductive hormones and blood flow to the uterus. In men, acupuncture helps improve sperm motility and concentration.
Cosmetic facial acupuncture naturally helps the skin appear younger, smoother, and healthier. It not only treats the signs of aging, but also improves the health of the skin. It works internally to stimulate the lymphatic and circulatory systems, which improves health and delivers nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, nourishing your skin inside out and improving the appearance of your skin. It also helps to even out skin tone and dramatically improves skin radiance by stimulating collagen production, improving elasticity and thus minimizing fine lines and wrinkles.
In auricular (ear) acupuncture, micro-needles are placed at specific points on the outer ear. It is believed that the outer ear contains a “map” of the whole body like a fetus in a womb. It is used to control ailments such as weight management, pain, stress, motion sickness, drug addiction detox, smoking, and drug addiction.
The painless and drug-free treatment of acupuncture is becoming more and more universally accepted every day when the well-being of body, mind and emotions is paramount.
